Letter to the Editor: Councilman Romero Giving Thanks
Councilman Dan Romero writes in to give thanks around the holidays.
-By Dan Romero, Hercules City Councilman
I am thankful for my wonderful wife of 27 years, my two daughters, and all of my business clients. I give thanks to all the supportive residents of Hercules who supported a different view of life in our city. That view was the recall of officials in Hercules last February and the election of three new members to the City Council. I am thankful for the employees of Hercules who have stayed true to their jobs and continued to give excellent service. I am thankful for the committees that helped the process of interviewing new applicants for City Attorney and City Manager. I am thankful for the consultant that has negotiated a possible deal for the Waterfront and for Jim Anderson’s patience with the change of government that occurred this past June.
2011 has been a year of controversy, but in Hercules we have been able to raise above all the controversies, and 2012 will bring a new view of the way business will be handled in Hercules. Ethics and transparency will dictate the future of Hercules. We will ask for our rightful amount of property taxes and will set a path to financial recovery. I give thanks for being alive, for valuable time spent with my family and friends, and for being a citizen of Hercules, California.
Enjoy your time with your families today, and prepare for the Hercules of the future.

I give thanks for the 8½ years of tireless and, as far as I could tell, ethically pure efforts by which Dan Romero selflessly devoted himself to righting the wrongs that were being committed against us, with no visible reward to himself. Dan is 50% of my pantheon of superheroes. (The other 50% is Tom Lochner.) I give thanks to Myrna de Vera who, in a moment of virtuous glory, stood alone in voting Nay when the council, on December 21, 2010, selected a new mayor (and chose, of all things, Balico). Said Santa Myrna, "I'm voting for my conscience, I'll vote Nay". We hadn't seen much conscience in government before that. (You can relive that thrilling moment on the video of the 12/21/10 council meeting: http://www.ci.hercules.ca.us/. Click "Meetings & Agendas".) I'm also grateful, obviously, for the generous, honest and capable leadership of Bill Wilkins and John Delgado; less obviously, I'm thankful for the Gérard Boulanger I used to know, the proud and competent spokesman advocating for all of us, and whom you can revisit in that same video. And finally, I'm thankful to Dan, for writing this editorial and thereby give me another opportunity to list my favorite people.
And since, as someone recently pointed out to me, I tend to go "too far": I'll risk overstuffing this turkey by adding Charlie Long and Fred Deltorchio to the Thankful list. We really wouldn't have made it without them.

Dan,
Thank you for reminding us about what truly matters. Life, family and friends. And yes, also being proud citizens of Hercules.
