Has anyone else noticed that the crime reports for Hercules are steadily moving in the direction of the crime reports for Richmond?

Have we not known of all this activity before this, or is violent crime increasing in Hercules?

They want to layoff more officers from Hercules PD. Crime rate will increase even more!

Further progress on the conversion of Hercules to Iron Triangle-North Campus: Crimereports.com is an excellent source of information on criminal incidents in Hercules, and I highly recommend it. The report I received today shows the following, all within the borders or Hercules:

-armed robbery: 1
-grand theft: 1
-residential burglary: 3
-petty theft: 2
-identity theft: 1
-auto burglary: 2
-auto theft: 1
-domestic battery: 3
-drug possession: 5
-warrant arrests: 3

The precise dates covered by this report are not stated, but I think I get these reports about once a week. This one was prepared before our recent home invasion thuggery.

This clearly is an exciting time to be an officer with the Hercules P.D. If we want to provide even more excitement for our officers, I propose we support the council/city manager's currently-proposed project of building rental housing at Sycamore North, Sycamore Crossings and Parcel C. Nothing is as effective at goosing the crime rate as a massive injection of low-income rental housing.

Thank you for the resource: crimereports.com. I agree with your view of the deterioration of the nature of Hercules residents through the years esp the recent past few. Crimereports certainly gives a heads up to residents of specific areas. As noted within the past 14 days there were 7 incidents within my complex of 320 homes. That is alarming compared to the rest of the city. Makes one wonder if it isn't one of the neighbors since there is only one way in/out of the complex.

Ani, the crimes are spreading throughout the city. Crimereports.com locates each incident on a map. During the time that Oliva was City Racket Manager, he and his pet Valstad Council did a lot to increase our euphemistically-labeled affordable housing. When I move here in the 90s, I was told by Police Chief Mike Tye that the only area with anything like significant crime were those condos on Willow with the England theme (Canterbury and all that). That's off on the border with Rodeo. He also told me in 1999 that Hercules had the lowest crime rate of any town or city in Contra Costa County, with the sole exception of Lafayette. Oliva and his council came later. Now, we can forget about any comparison with Lafayette. Richmond, though, comes to mind. Pittsburg.

Yes Glenn we have and so have our property values. Proximity to the freeway doesn't help. I keep my alarm
on now 24 hrs a day as opposed to only at night and when I was gone previously.

I think the crime rate has increases.I've lived here for 10 years without problems, and my house was burglarized 2 weeks ago, they broke a bedroom window, stole a flat screen TV , camera, and jewelry.I am NOT getting a new TV!I've also had to invest in alarms and other devices to prevent future break-ins, and the alarms are on all the time-this can also happen during the daytime!

Will those folks opposed to all taxes be ok with less police officers? How many less? I believe we are currently two below the recommended number per capita. How many more can we do without?

The recommended number of police officers, which was cited at the last council meeting, is simply the unmodified ratio of one officer for every X number of residents. That ratio, based simply on a generalized notion of "population", has to be increased as our low-income rental housing base brings in a different kind of resident. As that recent crime tally shows, we're at something more like 1.1 or 1.2 officers for every X residents. (Lafayette needs fewer officers per 1000 residents than Richmond; we're moving away from Lafayette and toward Richmond.) Another good reason to resist the council/city manager's push for large new districts of rentals.
