Famous American painter died Friday at the age of 54.
The Bay Area arts community was mourning the death of America's "Painter of Light" Friday with news that Thomas Kinkade had died. "Thom," as he was dearly called by friends and fellow artists in Los Gatos, is being remembered for bringing art to mainstream America, regardless of income levels and socio-economic backgrounds. "He had come to be an extremely affable man," said Los Gatos painter David Stonesifer, whose paintings grace local homes along with those of Kinkade's. "He was acting like a free spirit ... it was sort of like the kind of thing you wish would have happened to him years ago to have it reflected in his paintings." Stonesifer said he was "deeply saddened with the news." Millions of his "Kinkade paintings" adorn walls …

Leave your diaper bag at home and take a trip to the past
How much do you know about your home town? If you live in Hercules or Pinole, there is a rich history to the area. Just knowing the history of the street and park names adds to your understanding of how Pinole has evolved from a turn-of-the-20th-century settlement to what it is today. This weekend marks another of the Pinole Historical Society’s walking tours, this time a tour of the downtown area that ends at Antlers Tavern. Now who doesn’t like any event that ends at Antlers? Right? Built in 1890, the beloved tavern has its own legacy in Pinole, some of which you will hear from owner Geoff Torretta. The tour is one hour, 15 minutes long, and an easy walk down San Pablo Avenue. It meets at 12 p.m. at the northwest corner of San Pablo and …

Disappear for an afternoon salon facial and come out better for it.
Sometimes the smartest ideas are right in your face. If you are running on fumes and can’t muster enough energy to do anything active, the answer may be a deep-cleansing facial. A salon facial provides some time to yourself, even if it is just an hour in a dark room, so getting a facial may be the way to go. Your skin will thank you for it. A facial treatment at a salon is more than just a mud mask while your hair is up in some fancy towels. The most basic treatments often include a hand, neck and shoulder massage and deep moisturizing hand treatments as well. Cleansing is followed by extractions, which clean out your pores, and soothing moisturizers calm down your skin. It really is a complete escape where you quite literally cannot …

Printmaker creates hybrid prints that tell stories.
Although she grew up in San Francisco and lives in Hercules, Elizabeth Wooley has been a exhibiting member of Arts Benicia since 2005. She minored in studio arts at the University of New Mexico. Wooley is drawn to strong graphics, which shows in her work. She has been a printmaker for about nine years, combining multiple techniques to create a hybrid print. “Making prints for me is an intriguing process that combines intention and surprise,” says Wooley. She aims to create a textured surface with layers of collage and chine-collé, which transfers fine details and provides a background color behind the image. “I usually work spontaneously, letting the materials and process lead me intuitively to a resolution,” explains Wooley. Many of her …

Aqua Zumba yourself down a couple of pants sizes
So it’s fall now, with school and Congress back in session and Halloween costumes for sale everywhere. Have you noticed it’s still 85 degrees? Me too. If taking a walk would lead to a complete sweatbath in your neighborhood too, follow me to the newest craze within the newest workout craze. Yes, it’s Aqua Zumba. No longer satisfied with the unsophisticated moves of aerobics and its evil cousin, step aerobics, the middle class has moved on to the decidedly hipper and more evolved Zumba. Zumba is aerobics but with some Latin-influenced music and a little more hip swinging, the kind Shakira has so thoughtfully brought to the masses of North America and Europe. But it’s way too hot to do Zumba, so why not take a dive in to Aqua Zumba? Three …
